Summary:
Eating Disorders are a serious, yet treatable illness. While they are the second leading cause of death of all psychiatric illnesses, early diagnosis and intervention is key. Signs and symptoms can vary considerably and are generally not based on someone's appearance. Treatment is individualized to best meet the client's needs. Understanding the influence of societal beliefs and social media is crucial. The hope is that social workers will help create a healthier environment by reducing weight-based judgments while implementing neutral and inclusive language when discussing bodies, food and health.
