Goals & Objectives:

  1. Articulate the ethical foundations of self-care in social work practice, including how the NASW Code of Ethics frames self-care as a professional responsibility.
  2. Differentiate between burnout, compassion fatigue, and secondary traumatic stress, including signs, symptoms, and contributing organizational and systemic factors in the social service agencies.
  3. Critically examine the ethical implications of impaired practice, including how unresolved stress and trauma exposure may compromise professional judgment and client outcomes.
  4. Evaluate personal and organizational strategies for supporting worker well-being, resilience, and sustainability in ethically challenging environments.
  5. Develop a personalized self-care or sustainability plan that aligns with ethical guidelines and addresses risk factors for burnout and secondary trauma for social work professionals.

Bridging the Gap: Integrating Assistive Technology into Mental Health Therapy

Explore how assistive technology can enhance therapy for clients with sensory, cognitive, or communication differences. This interactive session introduces tools that support communication, sensory engagement, and continuity of care across the lifespan. Through demonstrations, case examples, and research insights, clinical social workers will gain practical strategies to integrate these technologies into practice and improve client outcomes.

 

Goals & Objectives:

  1. To increase awareness of assistive technologies that support mental health therapy.
  2. To equip clinical social workers with practical tools for enhancing client communication and engagement.
  3. To explore the role of sensory and kinesthetic tools in therapeutic settings.
  4. To examine the application of assistive technology in aging and provide tools for suicide prevention.


Speakers:

Tracy Keninger, MS, CRC, ATP has more than 25 years of experience supporting individuals with disabilities and their families. She currently serves as a Director at Easterseals Iowa, where she oversees programs that serve farm families, rural residents, and Veterans across the state. Tracy specializes in assistive technology, helping individuals gain greater independence and improved quality of life through innovative tools and solutions. She holds professional certifications as an Assistive Technology Practitioner (ATP) through the Rehabilitation Engineering Society of North America (RESNA) and as a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC). Tracy earned her master’s degree in Rehabilitation Counseling from Minnesota State University and serves as an Adjunct Faculty in the Drake University Masters Counseling Program.

Tony Raymer, LISW, RPT-S, has worked in mental health and disability services in Polk County since 2007. A Wartburg College and University of Iowa MSW graduate, he supports children, families, and adults with disabilities through individual, group, and community-based therapy. As Director of Brain Health at Easterseals Iowa, Tony leads therapy, crisis stabilization, and Multisystemic Therapy programs. He’s served in leadership roles with the Iowa Board of Social Work and NASW. Outside of work, Tony enjoys biking, kayaking, hiking with his family, learning woodturning, and is the proud father of two.

Four days of dynamic sessions, networking opportunities, and professional development await, and we want to make sure you are part of it. If you have colleagues or peers who are not yet NASW members, this is a great event to share with them as well.
