Summary:

It is well-established that LGBTQIA+ individuals and populations experience substantial disparities in mental health, physical health, and overall wellness. However, what is less attended to are the macro and interpersonal dynamics that have a direct and adverse bearing on overall wellbeing. While the phenomenon of trauma remains a significant instigating factor within the context of these disparities, historic research and discourse has failed to consider the unique and nuanced experiences of LGBTQIA+ people. This training seeks to emphasize the importance of a trauma-informed approach to working with LGBTQIA+ people with attention to the significant role played by minority stress. Moreover, this training will emphasize the importance of centering social work values such as recognition of strengths and resiliencies with supporting LGBTQIA+ individuals, family systems, and communities.

Goals:

1. Develop working definitions of trauma and minority stress.
2. Identifying the gaps in research related to trauma-informed care and LGBTQIA+ populations
3. Formulate a rationale for application of key trauma-informed care models
4. Identify key strategies for clinical intervention, support, and empowerment for LGBTQIA+ individuals and communities.
