13th is a 2016 documentary directed by Ava DuVernay that explores the intersection of race, justice, and mass incarceration in the United States. The film focuses on the 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery but allowed involuntary servitude as punishment for a crime. It argues that this loophole has been exploited to disproportionately incarcerate Black Americans, tracing the history of systemic racism from the Reconstruction era to the present-day prison-industrial complex. Through expert interviews, historical footage, and analysis of policies like the war on drugs and mandatory minimum sentencing, 13th highlights how mass incarceration functions as a form of modern slavery.
