Workshop Description:


This training offers a perspective on assessment and evaluation, introducing diverse approaches to cultivate a supportive environment. By emphasizing the invaluable role of trained professionals over impersonal online surveys, participants will gain confidence in their ability to establish trust, navigate sensitive inquiries, and discern effective strategies for client interaction. Ultimately, this training aims to equip professionals with the tools and insights to enhance their assessment and evaluation practices, fostering meaningful connections and empowering clients on their journey toward wellness.


Workshop Goals and Objectives

  • Develop proficiency in conducting assessments and evaluations by refining interviewing techniques and approaches to gather necessary information effectively.
  • Create a supportive and empathetic environment to foster trust and rapport with clients, essential for open and honest communication during assessments.
  • Explore alternative methods beyond standardized questioning to engage clients in a more personalized and meaningful assessment process.
  • Gain clarity on the significance of assessment and evaluation conducted by trained professionals versus online surveys, emphasizing the value of personalized interactions in gathering comprehensive information.
  • Develop strategies for addressing intimate questions sensitively and respectfully, while ensuring clients feel comfortable and respected during the assessment process.

Sharaine Webster (she/her) has a rich background in mental health advocacy, specializing in behavioral and substance use addictions, sexual health and wellness, and LGBTQ+ issues. Her work encompasses teaching as a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Iowa, operating her own mental health therapy practice, and conducting assessments for the Iowa Department of Corrections and Department of Human Services. Sharaine is an independent licensed clinical social worker, certified substance abuse counselor, and holds equitable care certification for working with sex workers, along with training in sex therapy.


Beyond her clinical practice and academia, Sharaine provides clinical trainings for practitioners and students, and she holds significant roles in professional organizations. She serves on the Iowa Chapter of the NASW Board and is the Central Branch Chair, as well as representing Iowa for AASECT and contributing to the training committee of the Iowa Board of Certification. Her multifaceted engagements demonstrate a commitment to promoting equity, well-being, and social justice within her field.
