This NASW-IA sponsored comprehensive 6-hour workshop addresses the most critical issues for the clinical supervisor in social work.This class has been developed for clinical supervisors providing clinical supervision to t-LHMCs, t-LMFTs and LMSWs who are working to become LMHCs, LMFTs and LISWs.

Key concepts to be covered include:

  • Responsibilities and models of supervision
  • Iowa regulatory requirements and the supervision plan
  • Parallel process and effectively evaluating and improving supervision
  • In addition, research examining at supervision will be explored

Through presentation, large group and small group discussions, the following aspects of supervision will be explored in this training:

  1. The purpose, role, and functions of supervision
  2. Theories and models of supervision
  3. Oversight and guidance of supervisees who diagnose, create treatment plans, and treat clients
  4. Individual supervision facilitation
  5. Parallel process and the importance of modeling strengths-based principles in supervision
  6. A review of literature regarding the practice of supervision in social work

Presenter: Kristin Helm, LISW

Kristin’s journey in the mental health field began over 15 years ago working in a residential treatment program while pursuing her Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology at the State University of New York at Brockport. Upon receiving her Masters Degree in Social Work from the State University of New York at Buffalo, Kristin became the Lead Therapist at a community mental health center. She later transitioned into the role of Division Director, overseeing three community mental health centers. Kristin currently works full time at her practice Compassionate Counseling, LLC located in Fairfield, IA while continuing to provide mental health consultation for Iowa Wesleyan University.

NASW-IA has determined that this program meets the criteria of the Iowa Board of Social Work for 6.0 hours of continuing education for Licensed Independent Social Workers who will be performing clinical supervision for LMSWs working to become LISWs.
